Platform notes
Each network has its own length limits and allowed characters. UsernameChecker reports whether a public profile URL or API looks taken. It does not identify people behind those profiles. For GitHub’s exact rules, use the GitHub username guide.
Checking a name
- Paste the handle without a leading
@unless you want us to strip it. - Treat “likely available” as a hint. Create the account on the real site to be sure.
- If a row stays unknown, the platform probably blocked the automated request.
GitHub
1–39 characters; letters, digits, single hyphens; no leading or trailing hyphen. We use GET /users/{username} on api.github.com. 200 = taken, 404 = likely available. Users and organizations share the same login space.
Up to 30 characters; letters, digits, periods, and underscores. Periods are allowed here but not on GitHub. A name with a dot will never be a GitHub login.
TikTok
Handles are unique and usually shorter than Instagram. Profile URLs use tiktok.com/@username. Soft 404 pages are common, so verify in the app.
X (Twitter)
Handles are up to 15 characters. If you want one string on X and GitHub, stay at 15 characters or shorter and avoid underscores if you also need GitHub.
YouTube
Custom handles and legacy channel URLs differ. A taken @handle is not the same as a channel ID. Confirm in YouTube Studio.
Etsy, Shopify, and other stores
Shop slugs are often independent from social handles. A free Instagram name does not mean the Etsy shop URL is free.
Use this ethically
- Choose names for your own brand or project.
- Do not use the checker to harass or impersonate anyone.
- Respect each platform’s terms when you register an account.
